What is a Thyroid Nodule Biopsy?
Thyroid nodule biopsy is a procedure performed using ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration biopsy to diagnose thyroid nodules. After conducting a thyroid ultrasound examination, the benign or malignant nature of the suspected nodules is determined using the thyroid nodule biopsy method. Generally, 95% of the results from thyroid fine needle aspiration biopsy are benign, while 5% are malignant. A malignant nodule diagnosis also means thyroid cancer.
Thyroid nodules are examined through physical examination and ultrasound methods. If a suspicious situation arises, a thyroid nodule biopsy is performed to determine whether the nodules are benign or malignant.
How is a Thyroid Nodule Biopsy Performed?
A thyroid nodule biopsy is performed by obtaining cell samples from the suspicious nodule using the thyroid fine needle aspiration method.
Before the thyroid nodule biopsy procedure, the skin in the neck area is disinfected, and then local anesthetic sprays are applied externally. Afterward, using ultrasound guidance, a fine needle is inserted into the thyroid nodule, and cell samples are taken from various locations within the nodule.
When is a Thyroid Nodule Biopsy Performed?
A thyroid nodule biopsy is performed when a suspicious nodule is detected after specific tests are conducted. Nodules in the thyroid glands may not be detectable by the patient. Even if a mass is externally visible in the thyroid gland, it cannot be determined whether the mass is benign or malignant. After an examination at Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bülent Çekiç Interventional Radiology Clinic, a thyroid nodule biopsy may be recommended if deemed necessary.
How Long Does a Thyroid Nodule Biopsy Take?
The thyroid nodule biopsy procedure usually takes a total of 1-2 minutes. After the biopsy, the patient can resume their daily activities immediately.
Why is a Thyroid Nodule Biopsy Performed?
A thyroid nodule biopsy is performed to determine whether nodules observed in the thyroid gland are benign or malignant (thyroid cancer). Physical examination, ultrasound imaging, and symptoms cannot provide a full evaluation of the nodules. If a suspicious condition is detected through these tests, a thyroid nodule biopsy is performed.
When Will the Results of the Thyroid Nodule Biopsy Be Available?
The thyroid nodule biopsy results are sent to the laboratory for pathological examination. Results are typically available within 1 to 3 days. Thyroid nodule biopsy results are nearly 100% accurate. About 10-15% of the results from thyroid fine needle aspiration biopsy are reported as indeterminate atypia (Bethesda 3). Studies indicate that 80% of these cases have benign nodules. To reach a definitive diagnosis for this group, molecular studies or a tru-cut biopsy (a thick needle biopsy taken under ultrasound guidance) are required.
What Should Be Done After a Thyroid Biopsy?
After the thyroid biopsy, patients should pay attention to the following:
- A cotton ball should be applied to the site where the fine needle was inserted for 20 minutes.
- After the cotton ball is removed, check for any bleeding.
- Patients using blood-thinning medications should temporarily stop these medications under the supervision of their doctor before and after the biopsy.
- To reduce the risk of infection, the biopsy site should be kept clean and dry.
- Patients can be discharged on the same day of the biopsy and resume their normal daily activities.
Does a Thyroid Nodule Biopsy Hurt?
A thyroid nodule biopsy is performed under local anesthesia using the fine needle aspiration biopsy method, so it is painless. The needles used for the biopsy are thinner than those used for drawing blood, so the procedure is not painful or uncomfortable.
How Much Does a Thyroid Nodule Biopsy Cost?
The cost of a thyroid nodule biopsy depends on the complexity of the case, the features of the equipment used, and the pricing policy of the facility performing the procedure.
